[Source Plant] Platycladus orientalis consists of the twigs and leaves of the Platycladus orientalis evergreen tree within the Cupressaceae family. The stems and branches are cylindrical, reddish-brown, vary in length, and feature flat, densely branched branchlets of 1 to 2 mm in diameter. The leaves are small, scale-like, opposite, and attached closely to the branches in a dark green or yellow-green hue. It is brittle, easy to break, and has a fragrant aroma with a bitter, slightly pungent taste.
[Habitat Distribution] These evergreen trees grow up to 7 meters high. Many are cultivated in gardens, while some grow wild. Branchlets are flat. The leaves on older branches are scale-shaped and opposite, whereas young branches feature spiral, lanceolate leaves. The flowers are unisexual, monoecious, and form at the top of the branches. The cones are ovate, turning dark brown and hard when mature. The leaves are medicinal and can be harvested in all four seasons for fresh use or sun-drying.
[Harvesting and Processing] Mostly harvested during summer and autumn. Small branches are cut off, thick stems are removed, and the remaining material is dried in the shade. During processing, the raw material is sorted to obtain clean "Arborvitae leaves". Alternatively, these clean leaves can be stir-fried over high heat until brown externally and dark brown internally, sprayed with a small amount of water, and dried to create "Arborvitae charcoal".
Chemical Composition: The leaves contain 0.6% to 1% volatile oil. The main component is α-thujone, alongside thujene, fenchone, pinene, caryophyllene, camphor, bornyl acetate, and terpene alcohol. Flavonoids include citrin, quercetin, myricin, and cypress biflavonoids. The crude total flavonoid content of fresh leaves is approximately 1.72%. The leaves also contain tannins, resins, and vitamin C.

2. Extraction Liquid Type: Evaluating methanol, ethanol, or ethyl acetate solvents:
• Methanol: 6 hours extraction at 70°C, liquid-to-material ratio 8:1 yields 8.450% total flavonoids.
• Absolute Ethanol: 6 hours extraction at 85°C, liquid-to-material ratio 10:1 yields 7.422% total flavonoids.
• Ethyl Acetate: 6 hours extraction at 90°C, liquid-to-material ratio 6:1 yields 6.748% total flavonoids.
Methanol yields the highest rate of flavonoids at the lowest operating temperature, making it the most energy-efficient option.
